"Depth Two" by Ognjen Glavonic (2016, 80min, Serbia/France) / VO Serbo-Croatian and Albanian with English and Greek subtitles
Unfolding like a hypnotic thriller, "Depth Two" investigates the hidden story behind the discovery of a mass grave in a suburb of Belgrade in 2001 and takes us back to 1999 and the NATO bombings in Serbia.
By using a combination of spoken testimonies of perpetrators and victims, essentially from the trials at the Hague tribunal, and images of the places where the crimes happened, the film speaks directly to the sensations, imagination and emotions of the viewer.
In an attempt to uncover and give a voice to the stories that are still intentionally buried in silence, "Depth Two" is a kind of a film memorial and also a rebellion against the ongoing oblivion.
Ognjen Glavonic (1985, Pancevo, today Serbia)
Ognjen Glavonic’s short films have been screened at more than 50 international film festivals and his documentary, "Zivan makes a punk festival" (2014) premiered at Cinéma du Réel Film Festival in Paris, has been screened at more than 40 international film festivals including IFF Rotterdam (2015), IndieLisboa (2015), CPH:DOX in Copenhagen (2014) and Festival dei Popoli in Florence (2014).
"The Load", his first feature-length fiction film, was premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival (2018) and screened at Toronto International Film Festival and Sarajevo Film Festival. The research he had done for this fictional narrative based on a real event created as an offshoot the documentary "Depth Two". It was premiered at Berlinale Forum (2016) and won the Best film award at DokuFest in Prizren. He is the director and co-founder of Pancevo Film Festival in Serbia.
"The Dead Nation" by Radu Jude (2017, 83min, Romania) / VO Romanian with English and Greek subtitles
"The Dead Nation" is a documentary-essay, which shows a stunning collection of photographs from a Romanian small town in the 1930's and 1940's. The soundtrack, composed mostly from excerpts taken from the diary of a Jewish doctor from the same era, shows us what the photographs do not: the rising of the anti-Semitism and eventually a harrowing depiction of the Romanian Holocaust, a topic which is not very talked about in the contemporary Romanian society.
Radu Jude (1977, Bucharest, Romania)
Filmmaker, producer and theatre director, since his first short film, Radu Jude received international awards for his work in festivals such as Sundance (Filmmaker Award), Berlinale (Silver Bear), Sarajevo Film Festival (Heart Prize), Namur IFF (Bayard d’Or for Best Film and Best Actor), Cannes - Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, Locarno Film Festival (Special Jury Prize).
"The Dead Nation" represents his debut in documentary film. It premiered internationally at Locarno IFF (2017), and it was selected in film festivals such as the BFI London Film Festival, Namur IFF, Viennale and IDFA.
